Gavin Bryars - Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet

I first heard this song on NPR (National Public Radio) in 1993 when they played an excerpt during a critique of the album which had recently been released at that time.

Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet is a piece of music composed by Gavin Bryars in 1971. It is based around a recorded loop of an un-named tramp improvising a hymn; eventually rich harmonies are played by a live ensemble of strings and brass, always increasing in density. The recording was originally made for a 1960s documentary by Alan Power which chronicled street life in London. Later when listening to the recordings, Bryars noticed that the clip was very in tune, and that it looped well into 13 bars. The tramp died before being able to hear the completed piece.

For the first recording as an LP, Bryars was limited to a duration 25 minutes for the piece; upon the invention of cassette tape technology, Bryars made a 60 minute version of the piece, and for CD, a 74 minute version.

The studio in which Bryars made the piece was next to a busy art studio. When constructing the piece, Bryars unintentionally left the loop playing and his door open during a lunch break; when he returned, the usually lively studio was quiet, and some people were crying.

A new recording of this work was made in the 1990s with Tom Waits singing along with the original recording of the tramp during the final section.

042210 was recorded in Chicago IL on April 22, 2010. Dan Mohr played a Sony Digital Recorder, sang, and played Nord Electro II. Sam Wagster manipulated samples and loops in Logic on his laptop. Both recordings are live.

By Any Means Necessary is an amazing artist and great friend. I want to thank him for doing an ep with me, it’s an honor. I’ve always had a great appreciation and love for industrial/ebm/dark electro, but I never attempted creating music in the genre itself until I saw/heard what Sam Witherspoon does, it is truly inspiring. I’m seriously indebted to him for doing this release with me, and I’m still upset that he put my name first on the cover. Seriously, despite his incredible talent, he remains one of the most modest people I’ve ever met. I only wish that my tracks on this ep could hold their weight against his. Listen to that first track especially, Damn BAMN!

Don’t forget, when you download this you’ll get two extra tracks, one from each artists and a booklet containing artwork from the both of us as well.

An epic journey of a composition, this atmospheric electronic musical excursion combines retro analog synthesizers and modern day signal processing to invoke the creeping atmosphere of a John Carpenter movie or the satanic version of a meditative new age meditation cassette tape. Influences range from Oneohtrix Point Never and Casino vs. Japan to Esbjorn Svennson and Ryuichi Sakamoto.
An improvised piece recorded in one 45-minute session by two Athens, OH-based electronic musicians: Alchemeleon (Kimball Challenger & Ibanez AD202) and Tales From the Trip (Sequential Prophet VS & Korg Microkorg).
The original audio was then mixed by Alchemeleon into the final piece presented here.

Even When The Time Comes by The Meets was written and produced by Brandon Locher and features a small ensemble of miscellaneous musicians playing freely expressive melodies and improvisational noise over an electronically created bed of sound collaged tapestry. The sound and vision discovered in this EP is likely foreshadowing for The Meet’s full length, It Happens Outside (coming in 2013).

Step inside Big 13 and meet some of the people I worked with back in the 1970s. Although every person was special to me, I’m going to give some people an extra CLOSE UP.

Let’s start off with the guy that hired me…JIM BENEDICT.

Jim’s interest in TV was sparked when he saw cameraman Joe Wiezycki on a WTVT remote. “I wanted to be like that guy, up in the air on a scaffold running a camera,” Jim once told me. Well, Jim is my idea of THE television guy.

Jim began his career at 13 as a camera operator, and later became a director and finally Production Manager, a position he still holds to this day. I was always amazed at the total control Jim had when directing. His mind was totally focused.

I guess the most amazing thing about Jim is that with all his talents and leadership, there’s a total lack of pretension. He’s the kind of guy who inspired loyalty because he fought for you, and in return expected only your best. Jim, whose nickname is ‘Peaker,’ understood what it took to be a WTVT production person.
